Dr. Xia Kaiwen, among the second batch of “young people plan” experts, Professor of University of Toronto, Canada, was awarded a master's degree and a doctorate degree in the year 2000 and 2005 respectively by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), California Institute of Technology, (Caltech) in the United States. In 2006 he was awarded Outstanding Doctoral Dissertation in Aeronautics by California Institute of Technology. From 2005 to 2006 he worked as a postdoctoral student under the guidance of Professor Clifton, the famous master of fracture and damage mechanics at Brown University in the United States. From the year 2006 he is professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Toronto in Canada. In 2007 he gained the Harting Award from the International Society for Experimental Mechanics.
Dr. Xia is mainly engaged in the research of engineering and dynamic failure of geological materials, the experimental technique of dynamic fracture and the mechanical mechanism. He has achieved international innovation achievements in the dynamic fracture theory and in the physics application of dynamic fracture in the field of earthquake source. He also has considerable international influence on the research of dynamic mechanical properties of materials. Dr. Xia has published nearly 40 articles, of which 15 are SCI articles, and some are cited by SCI papers for more than 50 times. Among those articles, two on laboratory earthquakes are published in the journal of Science in 2004 and 2005 respectively.
Professor Xia has first proposed the research program on the optical measurement experiment of spontaneous crack, and has conducted a series of studies. He has made a series of achievements in spontaneous crack of type I,
mixed spontaneous crack of type I to type II, and mixed spontaneous crack of type I to type II between dissimilar materials. In his pressure rod system, he has systematically developed and applied the latest experimental and testing technology of the international level, including the loading waveform shaping technology, the kinetic energy absorber technology, the multiple loading technology and displacement.
