Change is everything in the case of mobile phones. Recent research indicates that the mobile phone is changing not only our culture, but our very bodies as well. First, let’s talk about culture. The difference between the mobile phone and its parent, the fixed-line phone, is that a mobile number corresponds to a person, while a landline goes to a place. If you call my mobile, you get me. If you call my fixed-line phone, you get whoever answers it. This has several implications(含义). The most common one, however, and perhaps the thing that has changed our culture forever, is the “meeting” influence. People no longer need to make firm plans about when and where to meet. Twenty years ago, a Friday night would need to be arranged in advance. You needed enough time to allow everyone to get from their place of work to the first meeting place. Now, however, a night out can be arranged on the run. It is no longer “see you there at 8”,but “text me around 8 and we’ll see where we all are.”
Texting changes people as well. In their paper, “Insights into the Social and Psychological Effects of SMS (Short Message Service) Text Messaging\researchers distinguished between two types of mobile phone users: the “talkers” and the “texters”-those who prefer voice to text messages and those who prefer text to voice.
They found that the mobile phone’s individuality and privacy gave texters the ability to express a whole new outer personality. Texters were likely to report that their family would be surprised if they were to read their texts. This suggests that texting allowed texters to present a self-image that differed from the one familiar to those who knew them well. Another scientist wrote of the changes that mobiles have brought to body language. There are two kinds that people use while speaking on the phone. There is the “speakeasy”: the head is held high, in a self-confident way, chatting away. And there is the “spacemaker”: these people focus on themselves and keep out other people.
Who can blame them? Phone meetings get cancelled or reformed and camera- phones intrude(侵入)on people’s privacy. So, it is understandable if your mobile makes you nervous. But perhaps you needn’t worry so much. After all, it is good to talk. 41. The “meeting” influence of a mobile phone refers to the fact that ________. A. people can arrange their meeting place and time more flexibly B. people have to make a firm plan about when and where to meet C. people are able to meet someone at any place and any time D. people have to attend phone meetings than ever before
42. According to the two British researchers, the Social and Psychological Effects are most likely to be seen on ________.
A. talkers B. the “speakeasy” C. the “spacemaker” D. texters 43. We can infer from the passage that the texts sent by texters are _________.
A. showing or making known B. well written
C. unacceptable by others D. shocking to others
44. According to the passage, who is afraid of being heard while talking on the mobile?
A. talkers B. the “speakeasy” C. the “spacemaker” D. texters 45. Which of the following can be the best title of the passage?
A. The Influence of Short Message Service B. Changes Caused by Mobile Phone Use
C. Changes in the Use of the Mobile D. Body Language and the Mobile Phone B
Top Four Ways to Build a Wonderful Life 1. Live Below Your Means
There will always be temptation to give up the future for immediate pleasure. We all want to buy that new piece of technology, treat ourselves to an expensive night on the town, or take out a loan for the flashy car we can’t afford. It might feel great at the time but unwise spending hurts a lot later on. Enjoy life’s simple pleasures and save as much as you can. Expensive things don’t create lasting happiness and security. Careful spending will bring you greater leisure and enjoyment in the long run. 2. Put Your Money to Work
Saving is great, but to make the most of your money you need to put it to work. Good investments can be the difference between retiring in your 40’s or in your 60’s. A post today at The Simple Dollar really got me thinking. According to Trent’s estimates, if a person in their early 20’s invests 20% of their income in an S&P index fund, the interest they earn will equal their current salary when they reach their early 40’s. They could retire without a drop in income! Wise investing is the surest path to financial independence and it’s something everyone can work on. It’s definitely an area I’ll be devoting more attention to in my personal life. 3. Educate Yourself
To be happy we need continuous growth. The best way to grow is life-long education. This doesn’t mean you need to pursue a doctorate or spend 2 hours reading every day. Self-education can be anything that takes you out of your comfort zone. The important part is keeping an open mind and searching for fresh ideas and perspectives. Education builds over time. It might feel like the bits of wisdom you acquire don’t mean much, but over the years they add up to form a wiser, kinder, more interesting person.
4. Develop Lasting Personal Relationships
Suppose you had everything you wanted. Would you be happy without anyone to share it with? The personal relationships we develop with friends and family members are the greatest source of happiness in our lives. Don’t forget about them. Taking the time to cultivate and enjoy personal relationships is essential to long-term happiness. Without the people you care about you’ll probably be miserable, no matter how successful you become.
46. According to the passage, in order to achieve financial independence after
retirement, we’d better ________.
A. get along well with our family and friends B. bring ourselves leisure as well as enjoyment C. invest our money wisely when we are young
D. learn some new skills and try to find a new job
47. From the passage we can infer that some people try to ________. A. gain happiness by buying themselves expensive things B. save everything they can to help those in need C. devote more attention to their personal life D. take out a loan to promote technology
48. The author of the passage may agree that the key to self-education is ________. A. gaining as many degrees as possible B. being open to new ideas and views C. only focusing on very big events D. creating long-term happiness
49. The above passage is written in order to ________. A. explain what true happiness is about
B. offer ways to achieve a happy and successful life C. introduce different definitions about happiness D. persuade readers to find out the meaning of life C
In the countries of South and Southeast Asia, the elephant has been an important part of the culture, economy and religion for centuries. And nowhere more so than in Thailand.Unlike its African cousin, the Asian elephant is easily domesticated(驯化).The rare so-called white elephants have actually lent the power of royalty to its rulers, and until the 1920s the national flag was a white elephant on a red background. To the early Western visitors, the country's romantic name was“ Land of the White Elephant\".
Today, however, the story is very different.Out of work and out of land, the Thai elephant struggles for survival in a nation that no longer needs it.The elephant has found itself more or less deserted by previous owners who have moved on to a different economic world and a society in the western part. And while the elephant's problems began many years ago, now it has a very low national advantage.
How does the national symbol turn into ignored animals? It is a story of worse environment and the changing lives of the Thais themselves.According to Richard Lair, Thailand's expert on the Asian elephant and author of the report Gone Astray, at the turn of the last century, there may well have been as many as 100,000 national elephants in the country. In the north of Thailand alone, it was estimated(估计)that more than 20,000 elephants were employed in transport, 1,000 of them alone on the road between the cities of Chiang Mai and Chiang Saen.
This was at a time when 90 percent of Thailand was still forest---a habitat that not only supported the animals but also made them necessary to carry goods and people.Nothing ploughs through thick forest better than lots of sure-footed
elephants.
By 1950 the elephant population had dropped, but still to the number of 13, 397.However, today there are probably no more than 3,800, with another l,350 wandering free in the national parks. But now, Thailand's forest covers only 20 percent of the land. This deforestation(采伐森林)is the central point of the elephant's difficult situation, for it has effectively put the animals out of work. This century, as the road network grew, the elephant's role as a beast of burden decreased.
50.What can we know about African elephants from the passage?
A.It is of little value to domesticate them. B.It is hard to domesticate them.
C.They are living a better life than Asian elephants.D.Their fate is quite similar to that of Asian elephants.
51.Thailand was once called \"Land of the White Elephant\" because ________. A.white elephant was a national symbol until the 1920s B.white elephant is rarely seen and thus very special
C.white elephant has helped kings to gain the ruling authority D.this name was so romantic that it was popular among visitors 52.Why is the Thai elephant \"out of work\ A.Because there are too many elephants but too few jobs. B.Because the elephants can't do labor work any longer.
C.Because the government pays little attention to the problem. D.Because the elephants are no longer useful to their owners. 53.Which of the following statements is TRUE about the elephant population at various times?
A.There were 100,000 domesticated elephants at the turn of the last century. B.20,000 elephants were employed in transport in Thailand at the turn of the century.
C.By 1950 the elephant population in Thailand has been quite small. D.Today the elephant population is estimated at 5,150. 54.The passage is most probably from ________. A.a travel guide B.a history book
C.a popular science magazine D.an official announcement D
When I heard the piano, I walked to Mrs. Windsor’s house and waited outside as I always did. That meant she was working with another student, and I was not supposed to bother them by ringing the bell. I stood against the wall and daydreamed what I’d rather be doing. “Almost anything”, I sighed dejectedly. I had been tutored enough to read, understand, and even write some musical compositions, but I just didn’t have a gift for it. It didn’t come to me naturally. I thought back to happier times when I was writing stories and acting them out with my friends, cutting up old clothes to make dresses that performers wear in plays, and building scenery out of old things we found. But Mrs. Windsor had offered to give me the lessons
for free, so I felt my duty to try.
The door opened and Wendy Barton came out. I walked in, sat down on the piano bench and began to sort through my sheet music.
“Hello,” I heard a voice behind me say softly. I turned around to see a little girl standing behind me, eating an apple. But before I could make any response, Mrs. Windsor walked into the room in her usual urgent manner and announced, “Jennifer, this is my niece, Pasha. Pasha, this is Jennifer. Pasha will be giving you your lesson today. I’m up to my ears in something else!” she then exited to the kitchen. Pasha set her apple down on the side table and slid beside me on the piano bench. “What piece do you like best?” she asked.
“What do you mean?” I asked. “They’re all the same to me. I don’t know. “You mean you don’t have a favorite?” “No, not really.”
Pasha looked at me, rather puzzled, then opened my sheet music to the beginning page and asked me to play. I arranged my fingers on the keys and studied the notes on the page for a moment. Then I frowned and concentrated to make the notes on the page match the finger movements. I have to admit I was a rather mechanical pianist. After about a page or two, Pasha gently put her hand on top of mine as if to calm my fingers. There was a long pause. “What are you hearing in the music?” I looked at her rather strangely and admitted I didn’t know what she meant. “Like a story. What story is being playing out within the music?” “I guess I’ve never thought about it before. I don’t know.” “Here, let me try and you listen,” Pasha advised.
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, letting her fingers dance lightly over the keys. Then, she began to play. “See, it begins here beside some kind of river. Hear the water flowing beside you?”
Her fingers rose and fell gently on the keys. “Now the princess appears and she’s picking flowers from the water’s edge.” A carefree, happy piece of music filled the air in time to Pasha’s dancing fingers. “Oh, but she slips!” The music changed. “And our princess is being carried off by the fast-flowing stream. Quickly, the princess’s horse sees her plight (困境),” Pasha continued, and races to the river’s edge where he swims out to let her catch hold of him. They make it to the bank and she hugs her faithful horse and swears she will never again wear princess skirts that weigh her down. She will only wear jeans and T-shirt from now on.” Pasha finished with a big smile and then looked at me.
“Aren’t you the girl who tells the stories?” she asked. “I guess. I do tell a lot of stories.”
“Oh, yes! All the kids talk about them. I’ve heard about you. Well, all you have to do is learn to hear the stories in the music. That’s all there is to it.” “I’ve never thought it that way.”
“Let’s try another one, shall we?” Pasha smiled and together we played that afternoon, finding the stories in the music and learning that sometimes it takes a friend to pull you out of the river onto dry land again.

The persons helping me most
In the process of my growing up, parents play the most important role. Not only do I depend on them for money, food, clothes etc, but they are also the safe havens that always shelter me whenever I’m hurt. They help me to distinguish between right and wrong, and give me the solid values around which to build up my life. They teach me how to make decisions at the crossroads.
When I’m faced with difficulties, I also turn to my friends for help. They will always give me advice, and back me up when I deal with challenges. The faith and love between us remain here in my heart.
I have met many setbacks and challenges, but I always manage to get through them, owing to my parents and my friends’ help. I thank them for the warmness and support they gave me in the process of growing up.
