BOOK REVIEW OF JANE EYRE JANE EYRE is mainly about an English woman, Jane Eyre, who became an
orphan since she was a child, continued to pursue freedom and dignity in all kinds of hardships.
Charlotte Bronte, the author of the JANE EYRE, was born in 1816 in a village of England. At the age of eight, after her mother died, Charlotte, just like Jane Eyre, was sent to a charity organization where her two sisters got the lung disease and died later. Actually, Charlotte’s life was filled with hardships. But she didn’t give up and finally, she succeeded. It can be said that JANE EYRE is an autobiography of herself.
Well, generally speaking, JANE EYRE includes those aspects, such as the friendship, family love, love and personal pursue of freedom and dignity. However, I will just talk about two of them.
When Jane Eyre was sent to the Orphanage, she made her first friend, Helen Burns. I love those sentences, Helen told Jane Eyre, “Look, how angrily you remember every word! You should be happier of you tried to forget her scolding. Life is too short to hate other people, Jane. We all have faults, but when we die, only the pure flame of the spirit will be left. That’s why I never think of revenge, I never consider life unfair. I live in calm, looking forward to the end.” When I first read these, I was so amazed. I suddenly feeling refreshed. Though I did not believe in religion, I had to say, it hit the nail on the heart of the true of life. Yes, why do we
always complain some things in life? Why do we waste time in thinking of revenge? Life is too short to hate other people. We can live happier. Why not? I admire the friendship between Jane and Helen. Just as an old saying goes, “A friend in need is a friend indeed.” They show me this true friendship. Helen helped Jane when she was in trouble, and Jane did not give up Helen even though she was dying because of the fatal disease. I was moved and I hope I can also have this true friendship in life.
Another part I am going to talk about is the love between Jane and Rochester. Well, to be honest, I could not quite understand why they fall in love. Maybe it was because love came in time? Anyway, what I do appreciate is the attitude of Jane showed towards love. “Do you think, because I am poor, obscure, plain, and little, I am soulless and heartless? You think wrong! I have as much soul as you and full as much heart!” Man and woman are equal. Why do woman hesitate to express their own feelings? We should also have the right to express how we feel, to do what we like, to fight for what we need. These are also suited for love. Love needs each other's pay. I think it is very ridiculous and impolite that man always does things without asking woman’s agreement for they believe they are the charge and they can decide. But this is actually wrong. Well, I hope, in the future, when I am fall in love, I can be woman who has Courage, dignity, and wisdom, just like Jane Eyre.
It is hard for me to express all of my feelings. Maybe you can read JANE EYRE and feel yourself.
