Twenty years ago, I drove a cab for a living. It was a cowboy’s life, a life for someone who wanted 36 boss. I met various people whose lives amazed me, ennobled me, made me laugh and weep.
But none touched me 37 a woman I picked up late one August night.
I was 38 to a call from a small block in a quiet part of town. I assumed I was being 39 to pick up some people who had been partying, or someone who had 40 had a fight with a lover, or a worker 41 to an early shift at some factory for the 42 part of town.
When I arrived at 2:30 a.m., the building was 43 except for a
single light in a ground floor window. Under such 44 , many drivers just honk (鸣喇叭) once or twice, wait a minute, then drive away. 45 I had seen too many helpless people who depended on taxis as their only means of 46 .
Unless a situation smelled 47 danger, I always went to the door. This passenger might be someone who needs my assistance, I 48 to
myself. So I walked to the door and knocked. “Just a minute,” answered a(n) 49 voice. I could hear something being 50 across the floor. After a long pause, the door opened. A small woman in her 80s stood before
me. She was dressed like somebody 51 a 1940s movie. By her side was a small nylon suitcase.
“Would you carry my bag 52 to the car?” she said. I took the suitcase to the cab, then 53 to assist the woman into the cab.

\"For the first time in history, news was broadcast in England last night by the British Broadcasting Company\". So said the Daily News after the first two bulletins had gone out, the previous evening, from Marconi House, in the Strand.
The total staff of the broadcasting company at that stage was just four people. It had been set up only a few weeks earlier by the
manufacturers of wireless sets, mindful that the public needed something to listen to.
The task of reading those first bulletins on 14 November, at six o'clock and nine o'clock, fell to the director of programs, Arthur Burrows. He read each bulletin twice — once quickly and once slowly — and asked listeners to say what they preferred.
It was apparently a terrible experience. A couple of years later, he wrote: \"I am prepared to insist that there is no more challenging test of physical fitness and nervous condition than the reading of a news bulletin night after night to the British Isles.\"
Just imagine, he said, having to read an item about, say, a political crisis in Czechoslovakia — littered with \"place names strange to the eye, and looking as though they had fallen accidentally from a child's alphabet box\".
The first bulletins included details of the opening of the Old Bailey sessions, a speech by the Conservative leader Bonar Law, the aftermath
of a \"rowdy meeting\" involving Winston Churchill, a train robbery, the sale of a Shakespearean first folio, fog in London — and \"the latest billiards scores\". The second day of news broadcasts brought the first results of the
1922 general election. The Times reported the following morning that, with no more than thirty thousand people holding wireless licenses,
perhaps the most interesting feature of election night was the phenomenon of \"listening-in parties\".

London is the most expensive city in the world to live and rent a property (财产), while residents of Zurich can get the most for their (typically large) pay packets, according to research published today.
In a comparison of prices and earnings in 71 cities around the world, the Swiss banking giant ‘UBS’ found those living in London faced higher
living costs than those in any other major capital. When rents were excluded (剔除) from the calculations, those living in London fared slightly better, with the prices of common goods and services ranking third highest behind Oslo and Copenhagen.
Salaries in the two cities make up for the high cost of living: according to UBS Copenhagen has the highest wages before tax, and is closely followed by Oslo.
London only makes it to 10th on the list, after cities such as Dublin and Frankfurt.
Zurich ranks number three in terms of gross salary (毛收入), but when tax and other deductions have been made and net earnings are compared, the citizens of the Swiss city take home the most cash.
Zurich citizens also possess the highest purchasing power, UBS said, with workers having the most to spend for the hours they work.
The report said unstable exchange rates had pushed European countries up the cost-of-living rankings.
These include Dublin, which has seen rising living costs push it from the 13th most expensive city in which to live in 2005, to the fourth this year.
\"Other cities known for their high prices have ceded (转让) their places,\" the report said.
\"The US dollar's sharp decline in value — at the time of our editorial deadline, down almost 18% against the euro since our last
survey — has made New York a much more affordable place for European shoppers.
\"London is now 26% more expensive.\"
60. What makes London the most expensive city to live in?
A. The cost of rent. B. The cost of goods. C. The cost of services. D. Low salaries. 61. Which city has the highest wages before tax?

One of Britain’s bitterest divorces reached a settlement Monday
when Heather Mills was awarded $48.6 million — an enormous sum, but a small amount of what she sought and just a bit of the former Beatle’s $800 million fortune.
Mills declared herself “very, very, very pleased” with a payout that amounted to about $34,000 for each day of her four-year marriage. But some legal experts were surprised the former model, who has been widely described in the British media as a gold-digger, did not get more. “In the scheme of things, it’s quite surprisingly low,” said Patracia Hollings, a divorce specialist with London law firm Finers
Stephens Innocent. “It is offering her about 6 percent of his assets (资产). In terms of high-wealth cases it’s very low.”
A family court judge awarded Mills a lump sum of $33 million, plus the assets she currently holds, worth $15.6 million. Mills had sought almost $250 million, according to a summary of the ruling (裁决);McCartney had offered $31.6 million, including Mills’ own assets. The settlement was at the low end of many experts’ estimates, which varied between $50 and $100 million. The short life of the marriage, and the fact most of the former Beatle’s fortune was made before he met Mills were factors (因素) considered by the judge.
Mills, 40, raised eyebrows by firing her legal team late last year and representing herself in court, but legal experts said that was unlikely to have been a factor in the award.
“I don’t regret representing myself,” Mills said outside court. “I’m just glad it’s over.” Paul McCartney, 65, left after the ruling without saying a word. But
Mills appeared from the three-hour private hearing for a news conference on the courthouse steps — shouting angry words at McCartney’s lawyer, saying her former husband had underestimated his wealth and declared the settlement had secured her future and that of her 4-year-old daughter, Beatrice.
“All of you that have researched know that it was always going to
be a figure between 20 and 30 million pounds,” said a clearly agitated Mills. “Paul was offering a lot less than that … So we’re very, very,
very pleased.”
McCartney also was ordered to pay $70,000 a year for his daughter, and to pay for the child’s nanny and school fees.
67. Which of the following may be the best title for the passage?
A. Mills insisted on representing herself B. McCartney kept most of his fortune C. Mills “very pleased” with settlement D. Britain’s most expensive divorce
68. Which of the following statements is true about divorce settlement? A. She was awarded $48.6 millions for her marriage. B. She got less than what people expected her to.
C. She settled down in London on Monday. D. She was a gold-digger.
69. The underlined word agitated in the passage most probably means
______.
A. happy B. frustrated C. satisfied D. angry 70. It can be inferred from the passage that ______.
A. it might make no difference to Mills’ case even if her lawyer represented her
B. it would make great difference to Mills’ case if her lawyer represented her
C. McCartney would have more trouble with her former wife D. Mills would never go to meet McCartney from then on 第II卷( 非选择题共35分)

Robert Schumann showed his talent for music at an early age. Though his parents were not musical, they encouraged his musical interest with piano lessons from the age of 10. However, his family was later to be beset (困扰) by tragedy. When Schumann was in his teens, his father died and his sister committed suicide soon after, events that were to have a deep impact on the young musician. Initially (最初) music was to take a back seat in his life. For his main subject he studied law at Leipzig while at the same time continuing his music studies under the guidance of Friedrich Wieck. Clara, Wieck’s daughter, also showed a great talent at the piano when she was only 9 years old. A further tragedy was to hit Schumann when a mishap (灾祸) damaged one of his hands and spoiled his chances as a pianist. Some accounts blame a device he used to strengthen his fingers, but other theories suggest mercury poisoning as a side effect of his syphilis (梅毒) treatment. After the accident, Schumann was to concentrate more on composing.
Schumann maintained his association with the Wiecks and when Clara was of the right age, he sought to marry her but her father forbade it. Following a legal action, Schumann was able to marry her shortly before her 21st birthday. Although Clara was extremely talented in her own right as both pianist and composer, her career (事业) became secondary to that of her husband's and there are suggestions that Robert's jealousy was a factor in restricting her career. Nevertheless as well as bringing up
three children Clara played a significant role in classical music, through her expert advice and encouragement to other composers including Brahms for example. Although Schumann composed much worthwhile music, he suffered from mental illness with periods of self-doubt and suicidal depression. Following a suicide attempt he was committed to an asylum
(精神病院) where he was to die two years later suffering
from the later stages of syphilis.

第五 书面表达(满分25分) One possible version:
We conducted a survey on the students’ awareness of responsibility in our school recently.
According to the questionnaires answered by 56 students, we find some worrying facts about young students today.
Nowadays the majority of students simply care for themselves rather than others or the society. Nearly seventy percent of them never or seldom do housework. At school, about two thirds wouldn’t like to take part in class or school activities. They just bury themselves in their books,
ignoring affairs that they think have nothing to do with them. Only a little over one fourth suppose that they are to take up responsibilities for the society in their future life. What a worrying phenomenon the survey result has shown us!
I think it necessary for the school and families to take measures to change the phenomenon. Firstly, we must get the students to realize the importance of building up their sense of responsibility. Secondly, we should educate the students so that they know what responsibility they should take on and how to do their duties. Thirdly, we’d better organize colorful activities to create chances for them to practise responsible behaviours. 听力材料 Text 1

M: I only wore them at the weekend and they were broken now. I’m sure it isn’t my fault.
W: Even so, there’s no way to help.
M: I really didn’t expect things would be like this. Text 10
Now I’d like to talk to you about the final exam. The exam will be held next Thursday, the last day of the exam week. Remember to bring along
two or three pens in case you run out of ink. Unlike the mid-term, this test will not include multiple-choice questions. There will only be articles.
You will have to answer three of the five questions to write your articles. The exam will be quite difficult, which means you will be responsible for all of the subject matters we’ve covered in class. I
would suggest you review your mid-terms as well as the textbooks and your class notes. The final will count for 55% of your grade in the course, the research project will count for 20%, and the mid-term 25%. I’ll be in my office almost all day on Tuesday of next week. If you run into any
problems, please feel free to stop in. Good luck with your studying, and I’ll see you on Tuesday.
